What A Contractor WebsiteActually Costs In California.
Search “contractor website cost” and you get ranges wide enough to drive a truck through: $1,500 to $20,000, “it depends”, book a call. Here is the version with the numbers on the page — the market’s and ours.
The Three Price Bands, And What You Are Really Buying
Band one — do it yourself, $0–$600 a year. Wix, Squarespace, GoDaddy, or the free page your software vendor gives you. You get a site. What you do not get is a page for each job you want, a phone number that stays on screen on a phone, or anything a search engine can identify with confidence. For a one-person operation with more work than it can take, this is fine. For anyone trying to be found, it is where the phone stays quiet.
Band two — a semi-custom build from a small agency or freelancer, roughly $1,000–$5,000. The national guides that rank for this question (linked at the end) put the freelancer and template-build range at $1,500–$5,000. This is the band most California trades belong in, and it is where the price differences actually mean something: page count, whether each service gets its own page, whether the forms deliver somewhere, whether anyone set up Search Console and call tracking.
Band three — custom, $7,500–$20,000 and up. Conversion studios, custom design systems, intake wiring, CRM integration, launch content. Right for a multi-crew company with a sales team behind the phone. Wrong for a two-truck plumber, because the site cannot outrun the number of jobs you can take.
Our Numbers, Since We Publish Them
From the rate card — the same page every prospect sees:
- Launch — $1,000. Up to 5 core pages, semi-custom. A business with no site, or one so old it is easier to start again.
- Business Growth — $2,500. Up to 10 pages, custom visual direction, one page per service, on-page and local SEO, Analytics + Search Console + pixels. The one we recommend for most local service businesses.
- Shopify Commerce — $3,500. Store plus up to 25 products. For anyone selling a product rather than booking a job.
- Custom Platform — $8,000+. Portals, dashboards, memberships, bookings. Billed by milestone.
If cash flow is the issue: the Website Partnership is $750 down and $249 a month for twelve months, hosting and care included, and the site becomes yours free and clear at month 12. It is a real twelve-month commitment — we say that on the pricing page and in the contract, not in the small print.
The Monthly Number Is The One That Matters
The build is a one-time cost. Whether the phone rings is a monthly cost, because Google, the map pack and now the AI assistants reward businesses that keep their record current: schema, Google Business Profile, name-address-phone consistency, reviews answered, a new service or city page each month.
What that costs elsewhere: Ahrefs’ survey of 439 SEO providers found an average agency retainer of $3,209 a month and an average freelancer retainer of about $1,349; the single most common retainer band was $501–$1,000 a month. Our plans run $199 to $2,200 a month depending on whether you want the site kept alive, kept found, given video proof, or run with managed Google Ads. Where The Money Disappears
The expensive mistakes are not the ones on the invoice:
- A form that goes nowhere. The first thing we check in a teardown, because it costs every lead that had already decided to call you.
- A phone number that is not a tap target on mobile. Most of your customers are on a phone, in a driveway, with one bar.
- One “Services” page instead of one page per service. Nobody searches “quality plumbing solutions”. They search “water heater replacement cost”.
- No analytics. You cannot tell which of the above is happening.
None of those cost more to do right at build time. All of them cost real jobs when they are wrong.
What To Ask Before You Sign Anything
- Which pages, exactly — and is there one per service I sell?
- Where does the contact form deliver, and can I see a test submission land?
- Who owns the domain, the hosting account and the Google Business Profile on day one? (The answer should be: you.)
- What is the monthly, what is in it, and can I cancel? (Our answers.)
- What happens if I leave — do I keep the files?
